Add-on Licensure Proposal

Kenneth Liske on Jan 30th 2008

The Wisconsin Society for Music Teacher Education (WSMTE) is proposing to partner with the Wisconsin Center for Music Education to offer classes leading to add-on licensure in PK-5 general music for teachers who have older certificates for grades 6-12 music. The proposal is in the initial stages and I have a WSMTE steering committee meeting on Feb 16 where this will be the major topic. Colleges and universities will have to be involved in this. I’d appreciate any thoughts you have on this issue and how it could affect UWO. Here is a link to the current proposal text: WSMTE Add-on Certification Proposal

College Day for Kids

Kenneth Liske on Jan 30th 2008

Offering a class for College Day for Kids and involving a music education student as a teaching assistant (TA) is a great way to give them experience teaching kids. Please consider collaborating with a student to teach a class (or three).

College Day for Kids is Monday, May 19, 2008 at UWO. College Day for Kids is offered to fifth graders in the Oshkosh Area School District and Fox Valley Area. All students who are invited to participate have been identified as academically and/or intellectually gifted. They come to campus for the day, and participate in three, one hour and 15 minute mini-courses which provide a ’slice’ of college study. The pay for instructors is $75 per section. You can offer one, two, or three sections, and run only those sections that fill. (Sections run 8:45-10:00, 10:00-11:15, and 12:30-1:45) If you have a TA in mind, they would be paid $25 per section.

Shelly Muza will need a ‘blurb’ on your class to use in the brochure that goes out to the students by Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.

Move of Phys Ed to COEHS

Kenneth Liske on Jan 28th 2008

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: In Fall 2007 the current Department of Kinesiology (COLS) voted to split, with half of their faculty positions going to create a new Department of Physical Education and Health in COEHS. That move was unanimously approved by the COEHS faculty in January and awaits approval from the COLS faculty this semester. The new Department of Physical Education and Health will be responsible for teacher education and general education (marking the first offerings by COEHS in Gen Ed.) It will have 7 faculty lines, 5 of which currently stand vacant. The attached file is a memo from Dean Yeo which outlines the impact of the new department on COEHS. The real significance for Music Education remains to be seen, but Kinesiology, Art and Music had been the only departments in COLS which housed discrete licensure degree programs in COEHS. Now there will be only Art and Music. Read more: Move of Phys Ed to COEHS
